Digital sworn translation: how the ICP-Brasil and Gov.br signature works
More and more citizenship, visa, and enrollment processes with foreign institutions accept — and often prefer — receiving the sworn translation in digital format. But for that PDF to be legally valid, it needs a specific type of signature: a digital signature under the ICP-Brasil or Gov.br standards.
What is the ICP-Brasil digital signature
ICP-Brasil (Brazilian Public Key Infrastructure) is the official digital certification standard of the Brazilian government. A document signed under this standard carries a cryptographic certificate that verifiably proves who signed it and that the content hasn't been altered after signing.
This is different from a "scanned signature"
A scanned or pasted signature on a PDF has no legal value at all — it's just an image. A digital signature under ICP-Brasil or Gov.br, on the other hand, is cryptographic: any change to the document after signing invalidates the verification, which guarantees the integrity of the translated text.
Does it have the same validity as a handwritten signature on paper?
Yes. A sworn translation digitally signed under these standards has the same legal validity as the physical version signed by hand and notarized. It is accepted by consulates, universities, courts, and government agencies that accept digital documents — which today covers the vast majority of cases.
How to verify authenticity
Digitally signed documents include a verification code (or a QR code, depending on the signing platform) that lets the receiving institution independently confirm that the signature is valid and that the content hasn't been changed.
